Sequel to the Firefly series. If you have not seen Serenity yet, watch the series first, it's not required but you will miss a lot of the in-jokes, and the plot twists will have extra impact.

Not sure how Serenity stands alone, cos I am a fan of the series, but as good-series-to-cinema conversions go its a bloody good one. You can tell its had a bit of the Hollywood treatment, but it doesn't matter, there is still the close feel of the ship's crew, the witty banter, the Jayne-pisstaking, the River wierdness.
If you saw the film, and then want to watch Firefly, a few words of warning. On the small screen its a bit more cosy, the relationships between the characters are given more spotlight, and the fights are more western gunfight/brawl than the movies more polished, and more fashionable, kung-fu stuff.

Mechanically, its still bloody good. Seamless CGI and physical effects, wonderful set and incidental music, and solid acting throughout. A few scenes actually had me exclaim out loud, which is quite an achievement.
Bloody good film, series and concept. Western in space might sound weird, but it works really well. Firefly fans be prepared for a cracking movie and a few shocks to the established pattern. Firefly n00bs be prepared to want to rush out and watch the series.

I'm buying it as soon as it hits DVD.
