Fantastic supernatural thriller/action movie. Bags of well-rendered CGI, stylish cinematography and bloody good sets, it all pushes Constantine's rating up. A couple of trully unexpected plot-twists help it along and the fact that it's the first movie this year to make me actually and physically jump 2 inches into the air is also worth noting. Totally unexpected and not telegraphed in any way. Cool.
Constantine is a suicide who survived, before that he was a psychic, and now he is dying of lung cancer. So now he has a bundle of occult knowledge, the absolute certaintly that he's going to hell (all suicides do) pretty soon, oh yeah, and he can see angels and demons. What does he do? He becomes an Exorcist with attitude and a gun. Cue demons fighting in the street, diabolic plots, an occult underground support network, chatting to angels about damnation, dealing with the devil for the souls of innocents and all that jazz. Pretty spanky. All set to the background of the birth of the anti-Christ. Epic.
You get to see Hell itself a couple of times too, which should have won the CGI programers some awards, beautifully done.
On My Christmas list, and failing that, January Sale material.
